Our Story

Romano 1838 began 180 years ago with a love, a passion – perhaps even an obsession – with olive oil. Today, we are the bridge between thousands of consumers and the one of the best olive oil producers. Our strong and long experience permits it to control the entire manufacturing cycle of olive oil, from the olive tree to the bottle. The supremacy of our olive oils has been built up throughout years of consistent involvements and continuous research and analysis from crop growing to product bottling to ensure best quality.

180 years ago with love

We are proud to be producers of oils and composers of taste since 1838. This is the result of meticulous work carried out, from the olive that we grow in our Sicily farm to its transformation by our teams in the Romano mills. Our olive oils comply with precise specifications to guarantee the origin and manufacturing methods. This aims to protect the richness of our different terroirs and to guarantee you a unique taste.

Story and Mission

A STORY THAT BEGAN IN 1838 AND REACHED ITS SIXTH GENERATION.

IT WAS 1838, WHEN THE FOUNDER OF THE ROMANO FAMILY BUILT THE FIRST PLANT FOR THE OLIVES PROCESSING HERE IN ROMETTA, FORMED BY A STONE THRESHOLD ON WHICH TURNED A HUGE STONE MILLSTONE PUSHED BY AN OX. AN ANCIENT SYSTEM THAT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE WHEN I SEE THE PYRAMIDS, HOW DID THEY DO IT?

BECAUSE SCULPTING THE STONE IN SUCH A PERFECT WAY TOOK MONTHS AND MONTHS OF WORK, AND STILL HOW THEY TRANSPORTED THESE HUGE STONES WITH THE MEANS OF 200 YEARS AGO.. IT’S INCREDIBLE.

BUT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT AN ANCIENG AGE, MADE BY SURVIVING MEN WHO HAD SEEN AND CREATED EVERYTHING.. A TIME WHEN THOSE WHO HAD A SMALL HANDKERCHIEF OF LAND WERE WELL-OFF BECAUSE THEY WERE ABLE TO GIVE WORK AND HAVE A PLATE TO EAT EVERY DAY… A PERIOD WHEN A WORK DAY WAS PAID WITH A LITER OF OIL, AND I ADMIT THAT WHEN MY FATHER TOLD ME THIS I WAS ALMOST SHOCKED , NOWADAYS WE ARE USED TO FIND ANYTHING AT THE SUPERMARKET AND BUY IT WITH A FEW EUROS, BUT ONCE WHEN THERE WERE NO CHEATING OR SOPHISTICASTION, THE VALUE OF A LITER OF OIL WAS HUGE AND WAS NEVER ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE.

WHAT HE TOLD ME HELPED ME UNDERSTAND WHY MY FATHER HAD NEVER BEEN INTERESTED IN SELLING HIS OIL OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE WHERE HE WAS:” WHOEVER WANTS MY OIL HAS TO COME AND GET IT HERE! HERE WHERE IT IS CREATED” HE REPEATED IT TO ME EVERY SUGGESTION I MADE ABOUT MARKETING OUTSIDE OF MESSINA. AND HE WAS ALSO RIGHT, THE REAL EXTRA VIRGIL OIL IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, NOT ENOUGH IS PRODUCED FOR EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY OURS WHICH HAS INIMITABLE AND UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS.

A FEW YEARS AGO WE DECIDED TO GIVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TASTE PART OF OUR SMALL PRODUCTION ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO USE OUR EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL IN THE KITCHEN, FROM HERE WAS BORN THIS PROJECT CALLED “ROMANO 1838”, ENTERING THE YEAR FROM WHICH IT ALL BEGAN, AND EVEN IF THE PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES ARE NOT THOSE OF 1800, WE DO NOT WANT TO FORGET WHERE WE COME FROM AND WHERE WE STARTED, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE TEACHINGS OF OUR PREDECESSORS AND CARRYING ON THEIR SPIRIT IN EVERY BOTTLE AND IN EVERY NEW OLIVE TREE PLANTED ON OUR ESTATE.
